The first property of the Palo Alto Stock Farm was purchased in 1876 from George Gordon; later additions increased its size to approximately 8000 acres. Charles Thomas Marvin, 1854-1890, writer on Russia, was born at Plumstead, Kent. In 1878, he published Our Public Offices which embodied an account of the disclosure of the Anglo-Russian agreement, and the unrevealed Secret Treaty of 31 May 1878.
